Everything you need to know about wheel alignment

Posted June 17, 2024

Even though today’s cars are extremely advanced and sophisticated, it is very likely that your vehicle will have a mechanical problem sooner or later.

One of the most common is front axle adjustment (also known as wheel alignment). This aspect, often overlooked by motorists, can cause a series of problems and even, in the long run, make you spend money unnecessarily. Take the time to read the following and we will see together the advantages of alignment and the disadvantages of having an incorrectly adjusted front end.

Why do wheels need to be aligned?

It is first and foremost a question of safety. Non-parallel front wheels cause uneven tire wear on the tread and can damage your suspension. Your wheels will also demand more power from your vehicle, as the tires will not rub on the pavement properly, therefore resulting in more fuel usage.

Finally, misaligned wheels are more difficult to control and keep on the road. Eventually, you risk more accidents, not to mention many unnecessary expenses. This is why it is essential to make sure that your wheels are properly aligned.

How is the front end of the vehicle adjusted?

Regardless of the type of vehicle you own, the process for adjusting the front geometry is essentially the same. The vehicle is loaded on a platform and connected to a specialized machine. Sensors are placed on the wheels, in order to calculate various data, in particular the degrees of the wheels which will then have to be adjusted according to the specifications of your vehicle. Once the calculations are complete, the sensors send the information to a computer, which will allow the mechanic to analyze the geometry of the wheels. The latter will then be able to determine whether the wheel is straight or if it deviates, and can then repair or replace the defective part.
